Before we get into the specifics of training mechanics, it’s important to understand whether your players have the right mind set to be successful. A player can have all the talent in the world, but if he or she isn’t willing to put in the work without being hassled, it really doesn’t matter how much natural talent they’re born with. The articles below will give you in-depth understanding of the mental side of developing a successful player.

Do you want to be the best – Do you want to be the best? It is an easy question, but much harder to answer. Sure, everyone says that he wants to be the best. But, do you really?

The long road to success – Working towards your goals is not always a glamorous process. But, if you are committed and consistent in taking a small amount of action, you’ll be able to reach your goals when everyone else never imagined you would.

The mental side of basketball training – Everyone does the same drills or variations of the same drills. However, different trainers get different results (coaches too). Why? Because of their ability to reach, motivate and listen to the athlete.

The secrets of success – If you are willing to do these eight things, you can make your dreams come true. Most players say they are willing to do all eight, but their actions do not back up their words.

Basketball training is self training – Coaches can guide the practice, but the player must do the work. Coaches cannot make a player better, just like a teacher cannot make a student read.


After developing the proper mindset, it’s time to focus on the process of effective basketball training. Remember, training is a mindful pursuit of specific goals intended to prepare you for competition. Any knucklehead can work hard. Training is a cumulative process.

Basketball Training Program Structure – Many trainers and training programs seem to act or believe that just one workout makes a player better. They want to ignore the hard work and give a player a quick fix. It doesn’t happen. Trainers and training programs who are worth their expense provide a clear plan and a proven process not just a mismatch of drills and conditioning.

Pre-season basketball conditioning workouts – Conditioning is not skill development. Pick a goal for your session and stay true to the objective rather than trying to do everything at once.

100 game like shots in 20 minutes – People see a skill deficiency, especially in ball and player movement and shooting ability, but few understand its roots. Experts pass blame and make excuses, but few criticize players’ daily practice habits. To develop players with better fundamentals, we must teach players how to practice.


All trainers are not created equally. This section will help you identify a trainer that understands basketball development is a cumulative process focused on producing specific results to prepare you for game competition.

Why are you training? – Before you get started with anything, it’s important to know “why” you’re training. If you don’t, you’ll be wasting your time on the court since you have no specific goals your working towards in mind.

Deliberate Practice: The Maintainer or the Trainer – On the court, basketball trainers teach skills and create individual skill progressions; maintainers run players through general drills with little instruction or feedback. Off the court, athletic trainers carefully craft workouts to develop a skill or skills, while maintainers wear out players without a scientific approach to training.

Why basketball skill trainers fail – Trainers fail because players believe in their ability too much. Players and parents buy into their trainer’s skills and believe that they will improve because of the trainer’s magic touch. I can market myself by dropping the names of some Division I players and taking credit for their development because of the instruction and workouts.

Trainers and Hype – Gotcha, the secret is there are no secrets. The answer is there is no answer. Mentoring , networking, experiences and hard work are the answer, not a $99.95 boxed set of DVDs.


The old saying “the devil is in the details” is true when it comes to training. As your skill level and competition increases, the smallest details like proper nutrition, rest and regeneration, and mental training will be the key determinants that help you perform to your full potential and separate you from the competition.

Stephen Curry and the 24 hour athlete -When asked about the biggest mistake that NBA players make in their training, Steve Kostorowski answers: “If I could improve two areas in the lives of almost every player it would be recovery and nutrition.”

Sleeping more to enhance performance – Encouraging more sleep, as opposed to more work, goes against the athletes’ ethos. We believe that something needs to be harder to be effective. Sleeping more does not seem difficult. However, to perform one’s best, an athlete needs his rest.

Dribbling drills and point guards – How do I differentiate? Steve Nash is a point guard. He often looks to score. However, if he has a decent shot and an open teammate, he passes every time. Bayless had open teammates and decent shots and shot every time. Bayless has a scorers mentality; Nash has a playmakers mentality. The difference is not dribbling skill, the difference is mindset.
